Leadership is a skill that everyone needs to one degree or another. Learn leaderhsip skills that will benefit you in every area of life.

Not everyone is a born leader but everyone can learn to lead and increase their skills in this area. The four LEAD steps are a simple way to memorize the different facets of leadership.

Lead

Everyone has opportunities to lead and these are perfect times to work on your abilities. Leadership can be as simple as going against the flow when friends are making a bad decision or as difficult as volunteering in a group where no one wants to stand up and be noticed. Look for situations where you can step up to the plate, particularly in areas that you are passionate about or confident in. You will be surprised at what you find in yourself.

Equip

Training and equipping is an essential part of learning any skill. There are many good books on the market that teach leadership and these can valuable if absorbed and acted on. John Maxwell, in particular, has authored a wide range of books on leadership. Courses can also be useful and often offer practical opportunities to lead. Watch out at your local church or check what classes are on offer at night school.

Attitude

To lead you need the attitude of a leader. Watch those around you who are good leaders and certain attributes will begin to emerge. A good leader will display a combination of strength, wisdom, passion, concern and the ability to make decisions. A leader will have the attitude of wanting to help others to achieve their potential as opposed to a manager who simply wants to control and achieve the goal. A leader is people-oriented while a manager is task-oriented.

Dream

A leader will dream great dreams and have vision that spans several years. Look ahead and imagine where you could be in a few years time. Do you want to lead your family to grow in wisdom and prosper? Do you want to change the working environment at your office? Do you want to lead a city wide rally against drugs? The choice is yours. Pinpoint where your passion lies and begin to dream big, extravagant dreams about what you want to accomplish. Don’t limit yourself by small-mindedness or doubt.

Leaders lead and all of us lead in some way, be it big or small. Make a determined decision today that developing leadership skills will be an ongoing part of your life. You and everyone around you will benefit from it.
