A positive attitude is the difference between a happy people and the chronically despondent. Life is too short to be the latter, so work every day at being happy.

It's hard to turn the negatives in life to positives, especially when one considers all Americans deal with at home and around the world. However, few things are more important to your daily routine and your health than a positive outlook on life. Following are a few tips aimed at bringing more positivity into your life.

Positive Attitude Boosts the Immune System

First, examine what a negative attitude does to the body and to a life plan. Seventy-five years of lifelong negativity certainly takes its toll. Think about passing away at 40 or 50 due to chronic disease brought on by chronic stress and negativity. The immune system needs to be strong to fight off disease, and negativity lowers the immune response by increasing the amount of stress that one experiences.

A Circle of Positive Family and Friends

Surround yourself with positive people as frequently as possible. When you can't, tune out the comments and talk of the negative people. When even that becomes difficult, take a break, if you can, by saying you’re going to take a walk. Exercise is one of the most important ways to keep a sunny outlook on life.

Be the Positivity You Want to See

When all else fails, be a positive example to those around you. Trust that they will see your positivity and at least know some of the people they know are happy in an all-too-often unhappy world. But, one must also realize there are negative people who will never be positive people, and there is nothing anyone can do about them. Don’t feel you’ve failed with those who can’t or won’t try to turn their life around by working on being more positive.

When a Negative Attitude Overcomes You

Realize that even though you may feel down-at-the-bottom emotionally, things can only get better. Develop your own positive mantra and replay it in your head during the hard times. Thoughts such as "I am healthy" or "We both have solid jobs" can help to replace bad or desperate thoughts. Make a list of the many positive, good things in your life when you feel negativity taking over.

Help Children Develop Positivity

When kids see mom and dad struggling but still maintaining a good attitude, this is a strong message to them. Parents are the most influential role model for children, so use that to your advantage. Show them everyone has hard times, but attitude is a major contributor to overcoming adversity.

Permit Yourself to Let Go of Negativity

Positivity is not going to happen overnight, but rather is something a person has to work on each day. Allow yourself to let go of bad feelings and bring as much joy as you can into your life. Just as bad thoughts grow and turn into more negativity, good thoughts can prosper, take over and bring positive energy to your life.

Keeping a positive attitude in not an easy task, but it is necessary for well-being. Try to practice even one or two of these suggestions and see the difference it makes in your level of happiness and contentment.
