Ho'oponopono is a problem-solving process done entirely within oneself to clear away unconscious blocks.

What if the words "I love you" are the code that unlocks healing? According to the Hawaiian process called Self I-dentity through Ho’oponopono (SITH), healing means loving oneself, the greatest way to improve is to love oneself, and as each person improves, the world improves.

SITH is an updated version of an old Hawaiian problem-solving process. The purpose is to clear away the unconscious blocks and hidden programs that prevent people from achieving their desires. SITH was developed by Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, a Hawaiian Kahuna, who was recognized by the State of Hawaii as a Living Treasure in 1983.

Zero Limits and Ho'oponopono

Ho’oponopono became more widely know with the publication in 2007 of the book Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More by Joe Vitale and Ihaleakala Hew Len, Ph.D. The concept of zero limits is based on Ho’oponopono's intention to clear away all unconscious blocks and limiting beliefs so that a person is back at the zero state with no limits where divine inspiration can occur.

Dr. Len learned SITH directly from Simeona before she died. The book tells of how Vitale found and studied with Dr. Len. The information in this article is based on that book and the document "Who's in Charge" by Dr. Len, available for free download at the official Ho'oponopono website.

Taking Responsibility With Ho'oponopono

The first step in using Ho’oponopono is to take total responsibility for everything in one's life. This concept does not just mean taking responsibility for oneself, but as Dr. Len says, "…everything in your life—simply because it is in your life—is your responsibility."

In other words, no matter what a person is experiencing, they are the source of their own experiences. SITH asks "What is going on in me that I have caused this problem, and how can I rectify this problem in me?"

Memories or Inspiration

According to the ancient Hawaiians, errors arise from thoughts that are tainted by painful memories. Ho’oponopono means "to make right" or "to rectify an error." And it's not even necessary to know what the errors are. Furthermore, there are two ways to live: from memory or from inspiration. Memories are old programs replaying in the unconscious mind. Inspiration is a message from the divine. If memories are playing, it's not possible to hear inspiration.

So what a person does with SITH is to clean all the memories (or programs) to return to the zero state where inspiration can occur. Basically, it's a problem solving process done entirely within. Another way of saying it is that all problems or errors begin with thought (memories) and the goal is to release these memories.

Ho’oponopono Cleaning Process

The basic SITH cleaning process is simple, consisting of four phrases: "I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you." These phrases are said to oneself or to the divine, not to other people. It's self that needs healing, not other people, as self is the source of all one's experiences.

It's even OK to condense the cleaning process to one phrase said repeatedly: "I love you." Dr. Len does point out that this process is not a fast food approach to life: "It takes constant focus on cleaning, cleaning, cleaning."

Achieving Peace

Ho’oponopono is about 100% responsibility, which according to Zero Limits, means if people "are in your life, and if you take full responsibility for your life, then you have to take full responsibility for what they are experiencing, too." Accepting that concept means that the next step is to transform oneself using the cleaning process. And in transforming oneself, the rest of the world changes.

A final thought from Dr. Len: "The idea isn't to achieve results but to achieve peace." And who doesn't want peace?
