Improving oneself through self development activities can be intimidating. What we need is a short list of the best motivators; a top ten list of the reasons to get serio
Why bother with personal development? Why put your energy into personal growth and self improvement? Are new life skills really the way to a happy life? These are tough questions. Since I have a vested interest in coming up with convincing reasons for you to undertake personal development, I took my own advice and meditated.
Poof! In a flash, this list appeared before my eyes; The Top Ten Reasons to Get Serious About Personal Development.
#10. Your in-laws, who now view you somewhere between unfit to procreate and a worthless gold-digger, will go crazy. They'll be forced to find new character flaws to justify their opinions.
#9. Your spouse/significant other will have to find new reasons to complain. When he/she walks into the room prepared to berate you for languishing in front of the TV, but instead finds you deep into the Personal Development Channel, and even taking notes, she/he will be speechless. Ah, quiet.
#8. It will take your spouse/significant other some time, maybe even days, to find new reasons to complain. Ah, precious quiet.
#7. Personal development activities will look great on your resume. All HR executives love to see motivated applicants. You may actually get an interview or two for each hundred resumes you send out.
#6. Imagine how cool you'll look while seriously browsing the Self-Help section of your local book store. Members of the opposite sex will be impressed when you recommend two of the books that you've actually read.
#5. Friends and co-workers will be jealous of the new you. They may even show some respect and seriously ask you for advice. Ah, payback.
#4. You may even feel better about yourself. Acquiring new life skills won't clear up skin blemishes, thicken hair, and promote weight loss, but your self esteem will be so strong you won't care about those things anymore. Ah, dream on.
#3. You'll have something to be excited about each day. Imagine waking up and getting out of bed on your own without the threat of a cold water soaking.
#2. Your boss will notice the new and improved you. Of course, you may now be expected to produce something, but maybe you can legitimately ask for a raise.
#1. Now it's your turn. What is your #1 reason for getting serious about personal development? Put your entry in the discussion link below. The person entering the top #1 reason, as judged by a local expert, will be interviewed for a future article.

Although the article is "tongue in cheek," I really do want to
know why you are involved in personal development efforts. Post your top
reason (or two) and share your motivations with others. I'll be picking the
best submissions for subsequent follow up interviews in future articles.

Lindalee Brownstein :
Remember to add to your list that you can feel wiser and morally superior
to everyone else. ;-)
For me, I love personal
development. It makes the future look bright, like almost anything is
possible. It also gets me in touch with my own power to add something
positive to the world.
I am well aware that life is finite and
it is a comfort that I can live it fully and contribute something.
Plus, it is just exciting to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Both your #1 reasons for personal development are great, one a terrific
tongue-in-cheek topper for my list, the other a very insightful personal
reason. Thanks for contributing.

Judy M Merrill :
The top reason for personal development is self empowerment. When we are
at our best, we are functioning in all cylinders of body, mind, spirit with
optimum capacity.
God bless, J

A very good reason. Most people wouldn't try to function daily with their
hands tied behind their back; it makes sense to use all their physical
capabilities. But we often try to solve life problems without the benefit
of spirit. That's like having our hands tied.
