Successful people in every area of endeavor utilize eleven habits in fueling their success. Learn the habits and secrets of successful people.

What are the success factors of highly successful people? Do top achievers have secrets of success not generally known to others? It turns out that successful people become successful because of their habits, not their wisdom or ability.

Jon Gordon, motivational speaker and author of The Energy Bus, describes the eleven habits of successful people in his latest book, Training Camp (John Wiley & Sons, 2009). Training Camp is a parable for how to be successful, using the story of a rookie professional football player as he strives to be the best he can be.

Success Factors

In preparation for writing Training Camp, Gordon interviewed highly successful people from many walks of life. He discovered several success factors common to those who become successful.

Gordon found, "There is a way that the best approach their life and work and craft that differentiates themselves from others. And this formula is predictable, repeatable and simple to understand."

Secrets of Success

Many people believe that top performers, whether in athletics, the arts, or business are simply born with talents and skills superior to others. While successful people do have excellent skills, what really sets them apart is that they approach life and work with a dedication and devotion to be the best.

How to Become Successful

Gordon outlines eleven factors of success that are common to highly successful people. Someone striving to learn how to become successful can do so by committing to these eleven success factors.

  1. Successful people know what they truly want. They have a clear vision of success and visualize it in detail and with regularity.
  2. Successful people want to be the best at what they do and are committed to success. Many people want to be successful, even wanting to be the best in their field, but they stop short of full commitment. Successful people work hard at their craft and dedicate themselves to it.
  3. Those who are truly successful never stop learning. They continually strive to get better. Gordon describes giving a motivational presentation and noticing world-famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar sitting in the first row. Though eighty-two years of age, Ziglar was taking notes, still looking for ways to improve his craft.
  4. The best do ordinary things better than others. Through dedication and learning, they perfect execution of their talents.
  5. Successful people are focused. They isolate the key factors of success and strive to execute them to perfection.
  6. The best are mentally strong. They remain dedicated and focused on their success despite setbacks and obstacles.
  7. Successful people overcome their fears. Courage is the act of moving forward despite one's fears.
  8. The best seize the moment. Highly successful people are well prepared and don't hesitate when the moment of opportunity presents itself.
  9. Successful people tap into strength beyond themselves. Whether through belief in a higher power or some other sacred force, the best have a faith that sees them through difficult times.
  10. Those who succeed to the top leave a legacy, an inspirational story or legend for others to follow.
  11. Successful people make those around them better, sharing their wisdom and experience with others striving for success.

Habits of Successful People

These eleven habits of successful people are available to anyone with the drive and commitment to succeed.
