Go From Wishing About the Future to Making Hopes and Dreams Reality

Mar 20, 2009 Sharon Michaels

Setting goals is a great start. It is successfully achieving the goals that will make the difference between where you are now and where you want to be in the future.

There are no magic bullets or special powers that can instantly make dreams come true. What it does take is a clear vision of the future, a workable plan of action and an unstoppable commitment to achieving your goals.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for successfully turning hopes and dreams into reality.

Steps To Setting Your Goal

1. Know what you want and why you want it. It seems obvious but many of us overlook this step. The key word here is you. What do you want and why do you want it? We can often get caught up in the goals of the people around us and overlook what is truly important to us personally and professionally.

Make a list of all the things you want to accomplish or acquire within the next few years. Next to each item, give a detailed reason why it is important for you to make this want a reality. The more detailed your why, the more emotion you’ll invest in reaching that goal.

2. Choose the top three items on your want list and turn them into goals. If you choose to begin too many at once, you may feel overwhelmed. Choose those items from your list that stir up excitement, enthusiasm and optimism for the future. The more emotion you bring to achieving your goals, the greater chance they’ll become reality.

3. A key to successful goal setting is to write your goal as a present tense affirmation. When you write a goal in the present tense, your mind’s eye actually sees the goal as real. You want your goal to elicit as much positive emotion and excitement as possible. Positive emotions have the power keep you focused and motivated.

Here is an example: I, Mary Smith, on or before December 31, 2015 own a two story, three bedroom shake shingle home directly on the Atlantic Ocean. We happily spend our summers enjoying the peacefulness and beauty of the rugged New England coast.

Let’s analyze this goal: 1. It is specific with an achievement date. 2. It’s a positive present-tense statement. 3. There is emotional ownership because I’ve included my name. 4. It is vivid enough to form a motivating mental picture.

Steps To Achieving Your Goal

4. Develop a workable plan of action and consistently work that plan. It is up to you to achieve your goals. You have the power to make goals reality when you develop a viable plan of action. Make time to write out a step-by-step blueprint for achieving your goals. Break each step into workable bite-sized pieces and then, break each piece into a daily, weekly and monthly to-do list.

A key to staying motivated is to do at least one thing a day toward making your goals a reality. This is important for a couple of reasons: 1. It will give you a sense of success and accomplishment and, 2. It is motivating and self-satisfying to feel you are making progress.

5. Believe in yourself and your ability to make your goals reality. Belief can make the difference between wishing and achieving. You will only achieve what you believe you deserve. Belief creates the positive and powerful energy of success. There will times when you’ll wonder if you’ll be able to keep going forward. It is the unstoppable belief you have in yourself and your goals that will keep you going toward success.
