Modeled after spiritual devotionals, The Intellectual Devotional provides short daily readings of intellectual interest in each of seven areas of important human endeavor

The Intellectual Devotional, a new book by David S. Kidder and Noah D. Oppenheim, is a unique way to revive your mind for those of us devoted to personal development and purposeful growth. Personal development doesn't happen by accident. Mental growth is a process of continuous improvement and one wonderful means for mind improvement is to learn something of value each and every day. The Intellectual Devotional merits your consideration for just that purpose.

Modeled after religious devotionals which are often composed of short daily prayers or inspirational passages, The Intellectual Devotional provides an easy-to-digest facet of knowledge for each day of the year; three hundred sixty five in total.

Each week repeats the series with one page devoted to each of the seven areas of human endeavor.

In just a few minutes each day you'll be exposed to a significant component of each of these seven areas of human achievement. Whet your appetite for more information in an area that captures your interest or simply pick up an interesting tidbit or two you can use to stimulate discussion with casual acquaintances at your next party.

I've personally found the devotionals on philosophy most intriguing. I'm currently interested in the topic of Positive Psychology, so I found the devotional describing the philosophies of the Stoics particularly interesting. Faced with the question of how a person should live, the Stoics evolved the idea that one should seek happiness, defined as an excellent activity of the soul. Over two thousand years later, the evolving branch of Positive Psychology is arriving at similar conclusions.

Though the book is designed to provide one short reading each day, I find myself reading several "days" worth each evening. I enjoy the thread of continuity in each of the seven areas, as the authors move us through time and advancement in each topic.

The Intellectual Devotional makes a fine gift for that person working on personal development; perhaps that's you.
