Twelve Resolutions for the New Year

Twelve Months to a Better You

Dec 29, 2008 Jennifer Wagaman

Each month, resolve to do one thing that will improve your health and happiness throughout the year.

Make this year the twelve months to a better you. Each month, focus on one new area of your life, so that at the end of the year, you will have succeeded in doing twelve things that improve your life and the lives of those around you.

Kick a Bad Habit and Learn a New Skill

In January, decide on a bad habit to kick. Whether this is smoking, overeating or using bad language, pick one habit to break. Get an accountability partner to keep you motivated. For February, decide to learn a new skill. Make learning an important part of your life. Life-long learners will keep their minds sharp, and find new things to enjoy every day.

Do a Good Deed and Make a New Friend

In March, decide on one good deed to do for someone. This may mean holding the door for a mother whose arms are full, or returning a dropped dollar bill to its owner. Make a new friend in April. This may mean attending a church and finding a friend there, or befriending another mother at the local park. You can also meet one of your neighbors and invite them over to dinner, or join a book club.

Eat More Fruit and Get a Physical

It is important to eat enough fruit to stay healthy. Vegetables are just as important, if you want to add that to your to-do list for May. Try to eat two fruits each day. Start your day with fruit for breakfast, and consider a fruit snack in the afternoon instead of chips or another unhealthy snack. Adults rarely go to the Dr. often enough. In June, make an appointment to get a physical.

Get a New Pet and Lose Five Pounds

Pets can help reduce stress, so for the month of July, decide on a pet to add to your life. A puppy or kitty can provide love and companionship, but if you are allergic, consider a fish tank. In August, make the lifestyle changes necessary to lose five pounds. This may mean eating healthier and exercising more, but it will result in a healthier and happier you.

Reduce Stress in Your Life and Take a Sick Day

Find a way to reduce the stress in your life in the month of September. Whether this requires getting a new job, or starting a new hobby, stress reduction can help you be healthier and happier. Exercise is a great stress release. A great way to reduce stress is to take a sick day. In October, decide to take one sick day to spend relaxing.

Save More Money and Take a Vacation

Saving money is always important. In November, make it a goal to find a way to save more money each month. Writing out your budget and finding even a small area to cut back in can help make a drastic difference in your long term savings plan. At the same time, it is important to take a vacation every once in a while. In December, find a way to take a small vacation. A simple weekend away can help reduce stress.

Keep a journal of each thing you do this year that improves your life. At the end of the year, you can look back and see how far you have come and how much better you are as a person. Taking the initiative to make twelve changes in your life this year may surprise you at how easy it can be.
