Why Giving Your Time is Important and How You Can Get Involved

May 4, 2007 Aurae Beidler

Volunteering to help others can be a wonderful way of giving and loving others but let's remember the others we are helping before we count the personal gain or benefit.

Volunteering for Others, Not Just Yourself

How many of us have given back in life? I mean, actual given without wanting anything in return? Sure, lots of people give items to the poor, donate money, and give of their time but how many of us just do these acts without thinking of the benefits of tax deductions, promoting a good image, or building-up a resume?

For those who are looking for a way to give back in life, or to give of themselves, volunteering is a wonderful way to give. Not only does volunteering provide a service, it also provides a great experience for those who volunteer. To make the most of your time as a volunteer, you should ask yourself the following question, “why do I want to volunteer?” Are your motives selfless or selfish?

Get Started Now

Perhaps volunteering is the one thing that could change your life, or get you out of that rut. Maybe volunteering could make you feel alive again, or alive for the first time. This could be the one easy thing to help get your life back on track or make your life have meaning. It’s as easy as making a phone call, 1-800-VOLUNTEER, dropping by a place needing volunteers, or researching an organization online. There are even organizations that can help you find a place to volunteer. Most not-for-profit organizations run on volunteer labor. Here are some places in need of volunteers, possible places you could start volunteering for:

  • Your local hospital or health clinic has a constant need for volunteers
  • Youth organization like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America need volunteers to help reach youth through recreation activies
  • If you're of the Christian faith, music events like Creation Fest or Acquire the Fire, utilize volunteers in helping a generation of teens at risk. Other festivals are also always looking for support staff, as are charities
  • Any local church organization or charity. Think about the issues that affect you the most and see if there is a national charity that could use your help.
  • Your local homeless shelter
  • The Salvation Army – help the needy or those impacted by a disaster
  • Volunteer for the government at the U.S. Forest Service or the National Park Service – Get out in nature and help clean up the environment and recreation sites, be a campground host, or help prevent fires. This site has information for volunteer opportunities all over the United States.
  • Volunteer at your local school or become a mentor
